    Hello NDAB members,

First and foremost, I want to thank Brittney for her help this past year as our CEO. She makes life so much easier for us on the executive board. I think all the board members would agree.

Next, I want to thank all the members for their faith and supporting me as your state president. It is an honor representing all of you. Time has a way of slipping away for all of us as this term comes to a close for me.

Being a part of the building industry and seeing firsthand how our advocacy in government is important to protect affordable housing.  Tracking legislation at the federal, state and local levels helps to ensure expensive regulations don't hinder housing.

I hope everyone stays involved at any level and participates.  From board seats to committees, your help is appreciated more than you could imagine.

Though I will be stepping down as your president, I will still be a part of this awesome association.

Thanks again and I hope to see everyone soon.

    Bob Horab

October is Careers in Construction Month! This month, please help raise awareness of the well-paying jobs that are available in the home building and related trade professions. The home building industry offers strong earning potential. Half of all construction workers earn more than $60,320, compared to the U.S. median wage of $49,500. As many construction workers near retirement, more than 245,000 residential building jobs are open each month. Career and Technical Education students are well positioned to fill this gap. Workforce development is vital to help shape the next generation of builders! Thank you to Governor Armstrong who has officially declared October as Careers in Construction Month in North Dakota!

You can now register for our Annual Banquet on November 4 in Grand Forks. There will be committee meetings and the Annual Banquet on November 4 along with the fall board meeting on November 5. The Annual Banquet will be held at the Ralph Engelstad Arena and the meetings at the Hilton Garden Inn. We encourage all members to make the trip to Grand Forks as we induct our 2026 Board of Directors, 2026 President Nate Applegren, and announce our 2025 award winners!

    Hello NDAB Members,

Is it just me or does time seem to accelerate as we grow older? It seems like yesterday spring was just making its way to ND, now kids are back in school, campers and boats are getting winterized, and how are we going to get those projects enclosed so we can work through the winter inside? There is the theory that with experience, one becomes more efficient? Not so sure in my case because every year my to-do list gets longer preparing for winter. I guess it's part of living in the great state of ND....BULLY!!!

I want to say thank you to all who attended our summer NDAB meeting in Minot. It was a pretty good turnout and thank you MAB for hosting us. As always Brittney had our meetings well organized with the business side of the meetings to our guest speakers. It is very interesting for me to hear what projects are being proposed across the state as I attend several of the local events. I feel fortunate to live in the state we do in regard to the abundance of work available to our members. Federal defense projects such as the Sentinel project in and around Minot will be a huge boost to the north central part of our state. But supplies may come from several cities beyond Minot, so watch for those bid openings!

On another note, be aware of how zoning regulations in your local areas may be impacted by the new surge in data centers being proposed. Stay involved with your local associations to stay educated and informed of changes which may impact your business or development properties. As with any large projects like these, they can come with positive or negative consequences so stay informed!

IBS 2026 registration is live now for Orlando! Several have already registered, and rooms fill quickly. So, if you're planning to attend, don't hesitate.

Lastly, time is one thing we cannot reverse, though it is a precious commodity, don't cut corners to save time in exchange for safety! Those projects always find a way to get completed. Stay focused and safe so you can return home each day to those who support and love you most....your families!!! God Bless.

    Sincerely,

    Bob Horab

The North Dakota Association of Builders would like to celebrate and recognize our invaluable Associate Members! In 1981 the National Association of Home Builders designated September as Associate Member Appreciation Month and since then September has become our time to celebrate the contributions our Associate members make to our industry every day. These members constitute approximately two-thirds of NAHB’s membership. Associates provide the support, trade skills and materials that every housing professional needs to do business every day. Thank you, Associates!

Various Executive Officers and staff across the state attended NAHB’s Association Management Conference in Atlanta, August 19-21. We all had a great time learning from our peers from across the country and connecting with one another to gain insight on supporting our membership throughout North Dakota. NAHB’s Fall Leadership Meetings will take place in Denver on November 17-19, and the meetings will be held at the Hyatt Regency Denver.

Registration is now open for the 2026 International Builders’ Show® (IBS). The show will take place in Orlando for the “final” time on February 17-19. Go to www.buildersshow.com to find out more information, register and access the NDAB hotel block at the Rosen Plaza Hotel. Summer is starting to wind down, but we are definitely still feeling the heat! I hope you all enjoy the last part of the season with family and friends.

We just held our annual summer events in late July. The BUILD-PAC Summer Social took place the evening of July 29 at the Magic City Discovery Center in Minot and the Summer Board Meeting was held at the Hampton Inn on July 30. We had a Special Guest, NAHB’s Assistant Vice President of Government Affairs and our federal lobbyist, Heather Voorman! All proceeds benefited BUILD-PAC, NAHB’s bipartisan political arm, which helps elect pro-housing, pro-business candidates to federal office. We were so happy to have local members, statewide members, staff and special guests attend. Thank you to the MAB staff and directors for helping us put on this great event!

NAHB’s Association Management Conference (AMC) is coming up in Atlanta, August 19-21. This is a professional development conference for association Executive Officers (EOs)/CEOs and staff. At AMC, EOs and HBA staff gather to learn, create a community of HBA peers to consult with, and share ideas and walk away with actionable steps to create a stronger and more profitable association.

Registration opens for the 2026 International Builders’ Show® (IBS) on September 2. The 2026 show will take place in Orlando for the “final” time on February 17-19. Go to www.buildersshow.com to find out more information and to register in September. You will also be able to access the NDAB hotel block at the Rosen Plaza Hotel once registration is live. With summer being the busiest time of the year for our members, we hope you are still able to enjoy the next few months with friends and family amidst your working hours. Stay safe and cool in the heat!

Various NDAB members and association staff recently traveled to Washington, D.C. for the National Association of Home Builders Spring Leadership Meetings and Legislative Conference. We had a productive week of NAHB meetings which includes the Leadership Council meeting where our state’s National Delegates vote and act as the voice of the home building industry.

NAHB’s Legislative Conference took place on June 11 where over 1,000 NAHB members gathered on Capitol Hill. Our group met with our North Dakota delegation which included Senator Hoeven, Congresswoman Fedorchak and Senator Cramer. Various issues were discussed including energy codes, tax policy, lumber tariffs, and workforce development. Continuing conversations with members of Congress is vital to our organization and the home-building industry. Thank you to those who took the time to come to Washington, D.C. to be the voices of NDAB on behalf of our members!

Have you logged into the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) website to create an account? All members can start utilizing NAHB’s resources by following three quick steps to set up a login by using their NAHB pin. You can access various member benefits including NAHB Member Savings, educational opportunities, connecting with other NAHB Members, registering for NAHB events, and more! Head to www.nahb.org/register to complete the registration form now. Need your member PIN? Reach out to myself or contact the NAHB helpdesk at 800-368-5242 x8313 or nahbsupport@nahb.org.

Don’t forget to register for our BUILD-PAC Summer Social! Head to our website www.ndbuild.com/events to sign-up. National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Assistant Vice President of Government Affairs, Heather Voorman, will be our special guest. Committee meetings and the Summer Social/BUILD-PAC event will be held on Tuesday, July 29 at the Magic City Discovery Center and the Summer Board meeting will take place the morning of Wednesday, July 30 at the Hampton Inn & Suites. All proceeds for the Social will benefit BUILD-PAC, NAHB’s bipartisan political arm, which helps elect pro-housing, pro-business candidates to federal office.

    Hello Members,

I hope your summer has been going well. School is out and graduations are behind us. Time to make plans for an amazing summer vacation.

I attended a BIA member event in Fargo on April 10th. There was great attendance, and I appreciated the opportunity to be a part of the evening. A lot of great food and socializing was enjoyed by all.

The month of May took me to an event in Bismarck, which marked my 5th local association event to attend since becoming state president last November! I have felt welcome at all the events I have attended across the state. Hopefully I can make an event in Dickinson this summer!

NDAB had delegation attend the legislative conference in Washington, DC. Unfortunately, I could not attend but we had great representation. Please watch for a report from Brittney regarding this event.

I hope to see a good turnout for our summer BUILD-PAC Social in Minot. You can register at any time. Our fall meetings will be held in Grand Forks on November 4-5. Be sure to save the date!

As always, thank you for your continued membership and support! Without it, we could not advocate on your behalf.

    Sincerely,

    Bob Horab

Homeownership is the foundation of the American Dream! The North Dakota Association of Builders and the home building industry celebrate this by recognizing June as National Homeownership Month. Headlines across the country are highlighting the challenge of housing affordability. According to the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) estimates, 70% (94 million) of U.S. households cannot afford a $400,000 home. The estimated median-priced new home is $460,000 in 2025. In response, members of the residential construction industry continue to advocate for housing policies that will improve affordability in our state.

The homeownership rate declined to 65.1% in the first quarter of 2025, the lowest level since the first quarter of 2020, according to the Census’s Housing Vacancy Survey (HVS). Compared to the peak of 69.2% in 2004, the homeownership rate is 4.1 percentage points lower and remains below the 25-year average rate of 66.3%. There is no single solution to addressing the housing shortfall and making homes more affordable. A complex equation involving labor and materials prices; interest rates and financing costs; federal, state, and local regulations; density and growth restrictions; and supply and demand are among many factors that determine housing costs.

Despite the competitive pay, the residential construction industry continues to experience labor shortages, which leads to higher home building costs and construction delays. Alleviating regulatory burdens and making sustained investments in workforce development are a snapshot of several issues our association and NAHB are advocating to make the dream of homeownership a reality!

Registration is now live for our BUILD-PAC Summer Social! Head to our website www.ndbuild.com/events to register. National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Assistant Vice President of Government Affairs, Heather Voorman, will be our special guest. Committee meetings and the Summer Social/BUILD-PAC event will be held on Tuesday, July 29 and the Summer Board meeting will take place the morning of Wednesday, July 30.

The 69th Legislative Session adjourned on May 3. NDAB, which includes our lobbyist Lisa Feldner with Integrity Public Affairs, had a presence at the ND State Capitol Building every day while the legislature was in session. The NDAB Government Affairs Committee met weekly to discuss important bills related to our industry. NDAB’s Top Ten Bills from the session is now live on our website.

With the summer season upon us, golf tournaments are about to be in full swing! Don’t forget to register for your local golf event. First up is the WABA Golf Scramble on June 13 at the Eagle Ridge Golf Course, followed by the BIA-RRV’s first golf tournament of the summer on June 26 in Hawley. The BMHBA will host their annual PAC Golf Tournament on July 8 at Prairie West and on July 14, MAB will hold their Hammers & Keys Classic at the Minot Country Club. The BIA-RRV’s second golf outing will be on July 17, and their third golf outing will be held on August 14, both in Hawley. The summer concludes with the FORX Golf Outing on September 4 at the at Valley Golf Course in East Grand Forks and the DAHBA Golf Scramble on September 11 at the Heart River Golf Course.

    Upcoming Dates

    • NAHB Spring Leadership Meeting and Legislative Conference: June 10-13 (Washington, DC)
